AUTOMATE YOUR MACHINE SHOP WITH ROBOTICS

Robotics and automation continues to find its way into more and more industries. From advancements in medical robotics, robotics used for law enforcement, agriculture and food service, transportation and manufacturing, robotics and automation is becoming a necessity to remain competitive in many cases. It’s no secret that companies who move towards automation are looking to:

  1. Lower Automation Costs
  2. Increase Productivity
  3. Improve Product Quality
  4. Reduce Lead Times
  5. Improve Worker Safety

As a result of advancements in robotics and robotic technologies, it should come as no surprise that many CNC machine shops are embracing machining robotics as a tool to drive improved machining efficiencies and improve the competitiveness of their machine shops.

You may have your own reasons other than these for considering automation. Take the machining industry, for example. Many CNC machine shops are finding it difficult to find quality machinists. By integrating robotics and automation into their machine shop, they’re now able to run their CNC machines unattended and reduce their exposure to instability in their workforce or overcome the challenge of finding qualified machine operators in their market.

In this case, robotics in machining is helping to fill a void that other industries may not be challenged with, which is being faced with a lack of qualified employees with the necessary skills and experience.

Throw COVID-19 into the mix, and that brings with it entirely new challenges, as many machine shops are not able to operate at full capacity.

The reality is that robotics and automation is just getting started when it comes to the machining industry… but it’s here to stay. Ask around. Are you starting to hear about other machine shops who’ve integrated a robotic cell into their machining process? It’s becoming more widespread than you may think. Even smaller machine shops are beginning to embrace robotics, and there are a lot of them.

In fact, although the market size for machining services in the US is $32 billion, the US machining industry doesn’t have any players with a market share of greater than 5%.

As of 2020, in the US there are 16,764 machine shops with an employment base of 194,310. That averages out to 11.5 employees per machine shop. This means there are a lot of smaller machine shops out there faced with the same challenges as the big guys when it comes to remaining competitive. No matter the shape, size or focus of the machine shop, the same challenges remain: To remain competitive requires lowering production costs, increasing efficiency, reducing scrap/waste, creating a stable workforce, etc.

CNC Robotics For Smaller Volume Machining?

We’ve already talked at a high level about the use of robotic machining cells and automation in machine shops to address these challenges.

But What About Robotic Cells In Machine Shops With Smaller Volumes?

CNC Robotics Cell

This is where we hit a roadblock for our own CNC machining business. Robotics in machining was once only thought of as a solution for high-volume parts manufacturing and for larger machine shops with deep pockets. Using robotics in machining to perform repetitive tasks, and allowing the ability to produce extremely large volumes of machined parts.

Machining robotics or building robotic cells for smaller scale production, or even one-offs or prototyping was out of reach for many machine shops and we experienced this firsthand.

For our own machining business, we were looking to integrate a robotic cell into our parts production process. All of the automation and robotics solutions that existed for machine shops were only offered with high volume production in mind.

That’s not our business model. We specialize in small parts runs. One offs. Prototypes. And we just couldn’t find a robotics solution that was practical for smaller volume machining.

After a lengthy, unsuccessful search for the ideal CNC robotics solution we built our own. Fast forward to today, and we’ve fine tuned a model that allows for automating CNC production for smaller machine shops. The benefits are real, and we’ve recognized them firsthand. Robotic cells and CNC machining is no longer limited to high production machining.

Isn't CNC Robotics Only For Big Machine Shops?

No, robotics is now within reach for machine shops of all sizes, and more affordable than you might think. Robotics is definitely not just for large manufacturers anymore. Robots for machining can be a critical part of a growing tool shop’s plan to increase throughput, service more customers and expand into new markets. But what kinds of robots would work best in your machine shop? And how can you use these technologies to streamline your production processes and fulfill customer orders faster than ever before? That’s where we can help. Reach out today and let’s start a conversation!
